Uday, congratulations on clearing Trinity Grade 4! How was the experience of preparing for the exam?

Thank you! I’m really happy I cleared it, though I feel I could have done a little better. I had to record and submit three songs – two regular and one technical piece. The challenging part was an improvised solo, but I worked on it closely with my guitar teacher. Sometimes, I missed a few techniques due to nervousness or lack of practice, but it was a great learning experience overall.

How did you get started with the guitar?

I began learning guitar during COVID-19; just picked it up as a hobby. But the more I learnt, the more I started enjoying it. It’s been almost five and a half years now!

What role has Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park played in your musical journey?

The school has given me opportunities to perform like in the Christmas Carnival talent show. We now have instrumental periods where I bring my guitar. I’m also auditioning for the
inter-school orchestra, and the school has been helping us prepare during class time.

What do you love most about playing guitar?

It’s fun, versatile, and helps me focus. I love rock music and enjoy playing lead guitar. One of my favourites is Hotel California. I recently learnt the solo of the song; it’s so satisfying to play!

Guitar demands skill and discipline. What qualities have helped you the most?

Definitely finger strength and speed – they develop over time. Also, memory and attention to detail. There are so many small techniques you must get right. I practice about half an hour a day, 4-5 times a week. I maintain a schedule – guitar after dinner, studies in the morning.

What’s next for you after Grade 4?

Right now, I’m focusing on learning new songs and techniques. Grade 5 will need more preparation, especially in theory and finger control, so we’ll start that soon – probably over the next year.
