The era of Covid-19 brought about a surge in screen time for students, offering a unique opportunity to acquire knowledge while confined to our homes. Amidst the plethora of topics available through videos, books, and family discussions, my personal fascination gravitated towards space science. This article delves into the exploration of space agencies worldwide and contemplates the future of space science.

NASA: Pioneering the Cosmic Odyssey

At the forefront is NASA, the United States’ space agency, renowned for groundbreaking missions such as Apollo 11, Voyager 1, and Voyager 2. NASA’s ventures extend far beyond Earth, reaching planets like Saturn and Jupiter, uncovering supernovae, nebulas, and galaxies that enrich our understanding of the universe. Despite its triumphs, NASA has weathered setbacks, including the tragic incidents of Apollo 1 and Apollo 13, underscoring the inherent challenges of space exploration.

ROSCOSMOS: Russia’s Stellar Contributions

The Russian Federal Space Agency (RFSA or ROSCOSMOS) has etched its mark with successes like the Soyuz mission, and spacefarers from this agency are proudly known as cosmonauts. The legacy of Russian space exploration stands tall, contributing significantly to humanity’s celestial endeavors.

ISRO: India’s Trailblazing Journey

Closer to home, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), spearheaded by visionaries like Vikram Sarabhai and with the unwavering support of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, has emerged as a key player in the global space arena. Despite being one of the newer entrants, ISRO has earned acclaim for executing missions with remarkable cost-effectiveness. Noteworthy achievements include the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan 1), Chandrayaan 1, and the record-breaking launch of 104 satellites in a single rocket through the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Challenges and Lessons: Chandrayaan-2 and Beyond

ISRO, like its counterparts, has faced challenges, as exemplified by the setbacks encountered during Chandrayaan-2’s attempted moon landing. However, each setback serves as a stepping stone for improvement, with ISRO’s resilience reflected in its ongoing pursuit of success, epitomized by the upcoming Chandrayaan-3 mission.

ISRO’s Vision: Thriving Amidst Constraints

With modest budgets and numerous challenges, ISRO’s scientists persistently strive to position India as a leading space agency globally. The dedication of our nation’s people to science and mathematics has been instrumental in ISRO’s development. As custodians of our nation’s legacy, it is our duty to perpetuate this spirit of experimentation, fostering continuous learning in the realm of space and contributing to the pride of our country on the cosmic stage.
