‘Some schools teach lessons; this one built people’

He is, at present, living in New York City and deeply passionate about football, travelling, and finance. Spending 11 formative years at Apeejay School, Kharghar, has played a crucial role in shaping the person he is today. Professionally, he is a trader at one of the world’s top hedge funds, after building his career at leading investment banks like Citi Bank and Morgan Stanley. Meet Nakul Ramkumar.

In a candid interview, this Apeejayite, who joined the school in 2001, talks about the influence the school has had on him.

How would you describe the spirit and culture of the school in its formative years?

I joined the school in Class I, when a strong sense of loyalty and belonging already defined the campus. Building such a culture so early was remarkable. The kindness and grit of the then Principal stood out, while the teachers formed the backbone, consistently giving far more than their defined roles.

The greatest influence on your growth during those formative years.

I moved from the US to India just before joining the school and did not speak any Hindi. Adjusting to a new culture while managing anger issues was difficult. I was outspoken, questioned everything, and often got into trouble. I may have been challenging to teach, but my teachers chose patience and conversation over dismissal, shaping the person I am today.

How do you think the values imparted by the school continue to reflect in your life today?

The school was built on a strong foundation of principles. Growing up, I saw teachers consistently go above and beyond what their roles demanded. That set a benchmark for me. I carried that same work ethic into my professional life, where I always strive to do more than what is required.

What did it mean to you to see teachers who once guided you still shaping young minds today?

I recently attended the Silver Jubilee function, and it was genuinely heartwarming to see the present students interacting with the teachers. It felt like a full-circle moment and brought back vivid memories of my own school days.

What makes Apeejay School, Kharghar, a place to thrive?

Everyone here, from the support staff and cleaners to the teachers, gives their absolute best. There is a culture of continuous learning that allows the school to evolve with the times while still holding on to its core values.

Describe the school in one sentence.

It is a place where the conditions are perfect for you to build your character and truly discover who you are.

Any teachers or mentors who played a defining role in shaping your outlook or values?

I shared a strong bond with many teachers, but one had an especially lasting influence on my life. She was a mother figure at school who helped me navigate my anger issues. Even when she was not teaching my class, she watched over me. Punishments never bothered me, but the thought of disappointing her always did, which speaks volumes about her impact.
