Skill-based learning for Classes 11 and 12

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the government is set to introduce skill-based learning into the curriculum for Classes 11 and 12, in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The move marks a significant shift in India’s education framework, aiming to equip students with practical competencies alongside academic knowledge.

Pradhan emphasised the urgent need for a paradigm shift in the present education system. He pointed out that the earlier model focused heavily on degrees and certificates, often overlooking the real-world skills that make students workforce-ready.

Highlighting the government’s broader vision, Pradhan shared that skill-based education will not be limited to senior secondary classes. The Ministry of Education is actively working to roll out these reforms from as early as Class 6. What was once an optional or selective component in schools will now be integrated as a formal subject in the curriculum.

Embedding skill-based education at every stage will help create a generation of students who are academically strong and practically skilled. This aligns with NEP 2020’s goal of making Indian education more holistic and rooted in real-world applications.

The ministry is, at present, in the process of designing and finalising the new curriculum framework for senior secondary classes. Once implemented, skill-based subjects will become an essential part of school education, preparing students not just for exams but for the demands of the modern workforce.

With this reform, the government hopes to transform India’s education system into one that prioritises competence, creativity, and lifelong learning.
