The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta has issued the admit card for the upcoming CAT (Common Admission Test) 2024 to be held on Sunday, November 24. And as the clock ticks down for one of the most competitive entrance exams for MBA programmes, the pressure can be overwhelming. However, strategic last-minute preparation can make a significant difference in your performance on the D-day.

Here are some essential tips to crack the CAT exam and maximise your score:

1. Understand the Exam Pattern

The CAT exam consists of three sections: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Familiarise yourself with the format, time limits, and the number of questions in each section. This understanding is vital for effective time management during the exam.

2. Strengthen Your Basics

Before diving into complex problems, ensure you have a strong grasp of the fundamental concepts. Focus on building a solid foundation in quantitative topics like arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. For VARC, develop a habit of reading articles, editorials, and books to enhance your comprehension skills. DILR can be mastered through consistent practice of puzzles and logical sets.

3. Take Mock Tests Regularly

Mock tests are an indispensable part of CAT preparation. They not only help in getting accustomed to the exam environment but also aid in identifying strengths and weaknesses. Start by taking a few tests to assess your current level, and then progressively increase the frequency. Analyze each test thoroughly to understand mistakes and work on them.

4. Time Management & Accuracy

CAT is not just about attempting maximum questions but also ensuring accuracy. Practice solving questions within a limited time frame. Focus on the questions you are confident about and avoid wasting time on questions that seem too challenging. Remember, negative marking can affect your overall score, so be strategic in your attempts.

5. Revise & Focus on High-Yield Topics

In the final stages of preparation, concentrate on revising the high-yield topics that carry more weight. For QA, prioritise topics like numbers, time-speed-distance, and probability. In DILR, focus on commonly appearing sets. For VARC, practice reading comprehension passages and work on grammar and vocabulary.

6. Stay Calm and Confident

Stress management is key on the exam day. Ensure you get adequate rest before the exam, eat a healthy meal, and arrive at the exam center with a positive mindset. Remember, a calm mind can significantly improve your performance.

Keep in mind that the goal is not just to solve questions but to do so efficiently and accurately. Best of luck!. Good luck!
