Mime, one of the oldest and most powerful forms of theatre, reminds us that silence often conveys more than words ever can. To celebrate this art, Apeejay School, Noida, organised its Inter-House Mime Competition in the school auditorium, offering students of Classes 6-8 a creative platform to explore the nuances of communication beyond speech.

The event was graced by Principal Dr. Neha Sharma, Vice Principal Ms. Puneeta Bhasin, teachers, and a spirited student audience. The panel of judges included distinguished alumni and theatre practitioners Mr. Abhishek Dhirasaria and Ms. Harnoor Kaur Sukheja of the Samarth Theatre Group, known for their expertise in Indian and Western acting techniques as well as children’s theatre.

A total of sixteen finalists, four from each house, brought to life selected scenarios such as The Trapped BirdThe Lost KeyThe Ice Cream Disaster, and The Invisible Wall among others. Their expressive gestures, imaginative storytelling, and confident stage presence made silence eloquent, demonstrating how discipline and creativity come together in the performing arts.

Vedant Sharma of Gandhi House, who performed The Invisible Wall, shared, “I took on the role of a toddler and mimed playful attempts to cross a wall that blocked me. The fun reactions from the audience made it a delightful experience.”

From Radhakrishnan House, Reet Khanna presented The Ice Cream Disaster. She explained, “I mimed a scene of buying an ice-cream in a park and enjoying it, only to drop it in the end. The audience burst into laughter at the twist.”

Rushika Walia of Tagore House, also performing The Invisible Wall, said, “I mimed different scenarios where the wall blocked me—on the road, in fun situations—before finally breaking through with an imaginary toolbox. It was exciting and humorous.”

Nehru House’s Mazhar Abbas chose The Balloon Chase. He reflected, “I acted out chasing a balloon in a playful mime that made everyone laugh, including the judges. Performing was sheer joy.”

After a series of spirited performances, the results were declared. The first position was secured by Nehru House, while Radhakrishnan house went on to secure the second place. The third prize was bagged by Gandhi House while Tagore House secured the fourth place. The judges praised the originality and clarity of expression in each performance, noting how well the students brought silent stories to life.

In her address, Vice Principal Ms. Puneeta Bhasin congratulated the participants for their dedication and artistry. She observed howmime connected us deeply to life. And reminded us of the power of words, but also of the strength of silence. She also thanked the Theatre-in-Education Expert, House Wardens, and parents for their invaluable support.

The event concluded with enthusiastic applause and admiration, leaving the audience inspired by performances that proved silence, too, has the power to speak.
