The National Service Scheme (NSS) at Apeejay Stya University (ASU), Gurugram organised a cleanliness drive starting in the second week of November, focusing on beautifying and maintaining the area around the Bodhi Vriskha (Peepal Tree) on the university campus. The initiative aimed to foster values such as the dignity of labour, team spirit, a sense of belongingness, and ecological sensitivity among students.
The primary objectives of the cleanliness drive were:
- Inculcation of Dignity of Labour: Encouraging students to value manual work and understand its importance in maintaining cleanliness and a healthy environment.
- Promotion of Team Spirit: Engaging students in a collaborative effort to achieve a common goal, thus fostering teamwork.
- Sense of Belongingness: Cultivating a sense of responsibility among students for the upkeep of the campus and their surroundings.
- Ecological Sensitivity: Raising awareness about the importance of ecological balance and the role of cleanliness in maintaining a sustainable environment.
Prior to the event, NSS volunteers were briefed about the importance of the cleanliness drive. A team of volunteers was formed and assigned specific tasks, including collecting waste, cleaning the surroundings, and ensuring the proper disposal of waste.

The cleanliness drive began with a gathering of volunteers near BodhiVriskha. The volunteers were given instructions on how to safely collect and segregate waste. Volunteers segregated dry and wet waste, including plastic wrappers, paper, leaves, and other debris around the Peepal Tree. Special care was taken to avoid damaging the surrounding flora. Paths leading to the Peepal Tree were swept, and fallen leaves were collected and disposed of appropriately.
The event emphasised the use of biodegradable and reusable materials. Where possible, volunteers avoided plastic items and focused on sustainable alternatives. In addition to cleaning, the volunteers planted flower beds around the Peepal Tree to enhance the aesthetics of the area and create a pleasant, natural space for students and visitors.
The cleanliness drive saw enthusiastic participation of NSS volunteers. Approximately 30 students actively participated in the cleaning process, while others helped in spreading awareness. The collective spirit and enthusiasm of the participants made the event a success. The area around the Bodhi Vriskha was thoroughly cleaned and beautified, with newly planted flowers and shrubs. The drive instilled a sense of pride among the participants as they contributed to the well-being of their campus. The event successfully raised awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and the role it plays in environmental conservation. Volunteers worked together efficiently, demonstrating strong team spirit and cooperation, which are integral aspects of NSS activities.

The cleanliness drive near the Bodhi Vriskha (Peepal Tree) was a satisfying and resounding success, fulfilling the objectives of promoting ecological sensitivity, instilling the dignity of labour, and fostering a sense of community among students. The initiative not only helped clean the campus but also created a beautiful, serene space for all to enjoy, contributing to the overall aesthetic of the university. NSS will continue to organise such drives to promote a cleaner and greener environment, encouraging students to take ownership of their surroundings and work towards a sustainable future.
Sharing her thoughts, Apeejay student Ria Bhowmick expressed, “The Bodhi Vriksha Beautification Drive aims to enhance the visual appeal of spaces featuring Bodhi trees while fostering environmental awareness and community engagement. Activities include landscaping, installing eco-friendly features, and educational workshops. Benefits include improved biodiversity, cultural preservation, and community participation. The impact fosters ecological balance and sustainable urban beautification.”
Another student Kumud Kalra mentioned, “The Bodhi Vriksha beautification drive is an initiative aimed at preserving and maintaining the health of the sacred Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, believed to be the site of Buddha’s enlightenment. This effort typically involves removing dead and decaying branches, applying treatments to prevent fungal infections, and ensuring proper support and care for the tree to promote healthy growth. Protective measures include padding branches with rubber or foam to prevent injuries from support props, spraying micronutrient solutions to address deficiencies, and applying organic manure.”

Adding further, Keshvi Priya Sinha said, “”As we gather to beautify the sacred Bodhi Tree, let us remember the transformative power of Buddha’s enlightenment beneath its branches. ‘The Bodhi Tree is not just a symbol of Buddha’s awakening, but a reminder of our own potential for transformation. Just as its roots dig deep into the earth, our roots of compassion, wisdom, and mindfulness must dig deep into our hearts. May our collective efforts to beautify this sacred site inspire a sense of community, peace, and harmony.”
The success of the event would not have been possible without the active participation of NSS volunteers. Special Thanks were given to admin staff for their support and encouragement throughout the drive.
