Science Made Easy: ‘Integrity is the backbone of learning’

A science educator from Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, emphasizes the importance of a strong teacher-student relationship for enjoyable learning

Science always seems to be a challenging subject, complicated by big terms and terrifying equations. But knowing nature creates an amazing world of surprise and opportunities. For students in India, who sometimes have high levels of academic pressure, an appropriate approach towards science may lead students not only to cope with this subject but also genuinely like doing it.

Pankaj Kaushik, TGT Science at Apeejay School, Charkhi Dadri, to take the mystery out of the subject and increase a lifelong love for learning, here are some tips for the students.

One fundamental way of simplifying science is to relate it to life at large. Whether it be the boiling point of water on your cooker or the response of plants towards sunlight, relating what you learn in class to real life simply makes learning relevant and more memorable. It’s much more than just helping one comprehend intricate theories; this approach encourages wonder about how the world works.

It is the use of keywords that helps in mastering the scientific concepts. Often long scientific questions become intimidating because of terminologies unknown to the person. Highlighting the keywords and their meanings helps one catch the drift of questions more quickly and more effectively.

Not to be ignored is the regular recapitulation of topics. A little effort in revising briefly what was taught in the class during free time will reinforce your knowledge and build up more confidence, particularly before examinations.

Numericals and practical activities are an essential part of science learning. Most students get scared of numerical problems at the onset of their learning. As with any skill, mastery develops through practice. With regular problem-solving sessions, a student gets to an extent where everything turns into a strength.

Similarly, simple experiments or activities based on the topic conducted at home make understanding and retention strong. These experiences transform abstract concepts into something tangible and exhilarating.

The second important component of successful learning is the dialogue. You will realise that in a classroom where you are active — not just listening to the teacher but also asking questions, you are going to have a better understanding and make your time more enjoyable.

A good relationship between the teacher and the students is also very important. Knowing that teachers support their students and understand them will make students like the subject much more and study it with more enthusiasm.

Integrity in the learning process is the backbone of your education. Keep off those shortcuts labelled ‘cramming’ and ‘cheating’. Though these may avail you temporary solutions, they definitely will impair your capability of thinking critically and problem-solving, which science is supposed to build.

“Remember, Science is something more than just a compilation of facts; it is a meaningful way to understand the world around us. This understanding creates curiosity and innovation in our minds. Let your study of science be a journey of exploration and discovery, where every day brings you closer to unveiling the secrets of the universe. Let it be challenging, yet let it be fun!” the educator said in conclusion.
