Science Made Easy: ‘Break down the concepts for better understanding’

Apeejay School, Rama Mandi’s Science educator elucidates eye-camera comparisons to simplify the human eye chapter

The human eye is a biological wonder of engineering, similar to a camera, in its ability to capture and process even the most complicated visuals of the world outside. For class XI students, opting for Science opens up a whole new dimension whereby deciphering such complex systems of biology, like that of the eyes, can massively help students improve their marks and grades.

Students prefer to take up Science when they come to class XI because if the concepts are clear scoring a centum is easier as compared to any other stream. However, the trick lies in understanding and getting concepts bang on. While some chapters are easy to understand, some may require in-depth study and sometimes chunked down to make assimilate the topic better. Let’s take the chapter on the human eye.

Mastery of the structure and function of the eye also teases out the possibility not only of achieving excellence in biology but also of enriching one’s ideas about human physiology. So, let’s begin our journey into the amazing world of the eye and take a closer look at explaining such complexity in terms understandable and clear for a strong grounding in the biological sciences.

According to Monisha Sharma, PGT, Biology at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi who teaches classes VI to XII, there are several strategies that students can follow to make the chapter – Human Eye and the Colourful World easier to comprehend.

Comparison with real-life examples

Compare the eye to a camera, where the cornea and lens are the camera lens, the pupil is the aperture, and the retina is the film. This helps visualise how the eye focuses light and captures images.

Create simple diagrams

Draw a simple diagram of the eye. Label the main parts like the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, and optic nerve. Colour-code different parts to make it visually engaging and easier to remember.

“Breaking down the concepts is a great way to understand each aspect of the human eye. The students should focus on one part of the chapter at a time. For instance, start with understanding one part of the eye (eg, the cornea) before moving on to the next (eg, the lens). This builds a solid foundation. Creating flowcharts to show how light travels through the eye and how it’s processed into images by the brain is a great way to make things easy and interesting,” the educator explained.

Educational videos

Find short, engaging videos that explain the anatomy of the eye and how vision works. Videos can help students connect with the material faster.

“Another great way to learn is by doing some activities. Observe light changes; pay attention to how your eyes adjust to different lighting conditions throughout the day. This will help the students grasp the chapter faster and retain the information,” Sharma said in conclusion.
