In recognition of the urgent necessity to diminish the risks and fatalities associated with road crashes, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has officially marked January 11-17, 2024 as National Road Safety Week 2024.
This year, our focus centers on the theme of ‘Be a Road Safety Hero,’ underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in establishing a safe environment for every road user.
This global initiative is aimed at raising awareness about road safety and promoting measures to reduce road accidents and fatalities. It often involves various activities, events, and educational programmes to encourage safe road behaviour.

Common activities during Road Safety Week may include:
Awareness Campaigns: Public awareness campaigns through media, social networks, and community outreach programmes to inform people about the importance of road safety.
Education Programmes: Educational events in schools, colleges, and communities to teach children and adults about safe road practices, responsible driving, and the consequences of risky behaviours.
Traffic Rule Enforcement: Effective traffic rule enforcement is crucial for ensuring road safety and maintaining order on the streets. The need for enforcement activities to ensure that traffic rules are being followed, and penalties for violations are enforced strictly is an imperative part of the initiative.
Community Engagement: Involvement of local communities, businesses, and organisations in promoting road safety through various activities such as workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions.
Vehicle Safety Checks: Ensuring the safety of your vehicle through regular inspections and maintenance is crucial for preventing accidents and maintaining optimal performance. Regular vehicle safety checks encompass a range of examinations to identify potential issues and address them promptly.
Pedestrian Safety: Emphasising the importance of pedestrian safety, including the use of crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and general awareness while walking on or near roads.

Drunk Driving Awareness: Raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving is crucial in promoting road safety and preventing accidents. Drunk driving poses serious risks to individuals on the road and contributes to a significant number of accidents and fatalities.
Helmet and Seatbelt Campaigns: Promoting the use of helmets and seatbelts is fundamental in enhancing road safety for both motorcyclists and vehicle occupants. Effective campaigns can encourage compliance with these safety measures and significantly reduce the severity of injuries in case of accidents.
