Recently, Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar, hosted an engaging debate competition as part of its RIDS activity. The event brought together Class VIII students to deliberate on a thought-provoking topic: Genetically Modified (GM) Crops-Beneficial or Harmful.

The debate was designed to sharpen the students’ skills in scientific thinking, logical reasoning, and persuasive communication. Each participant had to not only present their stance but also counter the arguments of the opposing side. This helped them learn how to structure thoughts clearly and respond with confidence.

Two sides, one lesson

One group spoke in favour of GM crops, highlighting how they can increase yields, resist pests, and ensure food security. They stressed the role of Science in solving agricultural challenges. The other side raised concerns about possible health risks, ecological imbalance, and the impact on traditional farming practices. Together, these contrasting perspectives offered the audience a balanced view of the ongoing global debate on biotechnology in agriculture.

What made the session remarkable was the enthusiasm and preparation displayed by the young debaters. Their ability to present arguments with clarity showed how learning can move beyond textbooks and into real-world issues. For many, it was the first step in developing the habit of asking critical questions and seeking informed answers.

Growing into conscious citizens

The competition was not just about who argued better. It was about helping students think critically about issues that affect everyday life. The event succeeded in making them aware that every scientific advancement comes with both promise and responsibility. By debating both the benefits and risks of GM crops, students learnt the importance of thoughtful decision-making in society.

The day concluded on an encouraging note, with teachers and peers appreciating the efforts of all participants. It was a reminder that school activities, when thoughtfully designed, can prepare young minds to become informed, responsible, and confident citizens, while also nurturing teamwork, respect for diverse opinions, and a deeper curiosity about the world around them.
