Rewind 2024: What did the world achieve

Published

on

As we come closer to the end of this year, we can say that this year was of deep significance. From science and technology to social and economic developments, our achievements remind us of what we can accomplish, and more importantly, what is left to achieve. Amid today’s uncertainties, the milestones of 2024 serve as a reminder of the lasting strength found in progress, collaboration, and hope. This article explores the key moments that defined this year.

1 Space exploration

The Artemis program: This year NASA conducted a total of 5 tests for the Artemis mission including the testing of the Solid rocket boosters (SRB’s), the docking mechanism, and the sound suppression system. The Artemis 2 mission is expected to touch the surface of the moon in late 2025 carrying 4 astronauts, over 62 years after Apollo 17, the last Apollo spacecraft touched the moon. The Artemis will lay ground for future missions to mars.

The Aditya L-1: launched on September 2nd, 2023 by ISRO onboard PSLV C57, it reached its destination, the Lagrange point 1 on 2nd July 2024. This spacecraft travelled 1.5 million km from its launch site, the Satish Dhawan space center in Sriharikota. This satellite will provide invaluable information about the outermost layer of the sun, the cornea via a X-band communication system (which is basically a high-frequency communication system.

2 Environment and sustainability

Renewable energy milestones: As 2024 comes to an end, 40% of the world energy comes from renewable sources (such as windmills, solar energy, etc.) China Expanded its solar capacity by installing large-scale photovoltaic farms, especially in desert regions, contributing significantly to the global supply. Made substantial progress with its renewable energy targets, achieving milestones in both solar power generation and rural electrification through renewables.

Ocean cleanup success- 2024 also saw enormous progress in addressing one of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges: plastic pollution. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a massive collection of floating plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean, was reduced by over 50%. All thanks to coordinated global efforts.

3 Sports and Culture

Paris Olympics- held in the month of July and August attracted more than 26.5 million spectators from across the world. The Olympics featured a total of 32 sports, The 2024 Summer Olympics also included 329 other events and 48 disciplines. Over 10500 athletes came from 206 different countries.

The Rio de Janeiro Carnival: The Rio Carnival 2024 left an indelible mark, setting new standards for creativity, sustainability, and innovation. It was more than just a celebration; it was a cultural wonder that united people across borders and showcased the diversity of Brazilian culture on a global stage.

4 Technology

Breakthrough in fusion energy: for the first time ever scientists were able to achieve a net-positive energy from nuclear fusion. This was specifically difficult because of the extreme temperatures and pressure. This now brings us a step closer to clean and limitless energy which would eventually help us replace fossil fuels completely.

AI for global good: many new AI systems were tested in many fields. Earlier this year an AI-powered robot was able to perform a microsurgery on rats and pigs. AI was also used to predict natural disasters which ultimately saved many lives.

In Short, 2024 was an important year. From environmental sustainability to space exploration, this year gave a lot to humanity. As we continue down the path of development, we hope that the next year brings even greater advancements in technology, healthcare, and sustainability, paving the way for a brighter future for all.
