Harshit Sharma, an alumnus of Apeejay School, Saket, has built a promising career in software development. From excelling in academics to securing a position at Paytm, his journey reflects resilience, adaptability, and a passion for technology. In this conversation, he shares insights from his school days, work experience, and advice for aspiring engineers. Read edited excerpts:
Harshit, what inspired you to pursue computer science engineering?
Back in school, I was always drawn to computer science. The subject fascinated me, but at that stage, I was more interested in the theoretical aspects. It was only later in college that I truly decided to pursue engineering as a career.
So, how did your school shape your academic and career choices?
School played a big role in developing my interests. I loved physics, maths, and computer science, and my teachers helped nurture my curiosity. I was also active in sports like basketball and table tennis, which taught me discipline and teamwork—both of which help in professional life.
Could you share your career journey from college to working at Paytm?
After completing my Computer Science Engineering degree at IIIT Delhi, I joined MakeMyTrip as a software engineer. I worked there for a while before moving to Paytm, where I am currently working as a software developer.
What are some important lessons you’ve learned in your four years of work experience?
One major lesson is to always keep learning. Technology evolves rapidly, and you have to keep up. Also, challenges are part of the job—sometimes it feels like too much is being asked of you, but if you stay consistent and push through, you grow immensely.
And what advice would you give to students who want to pursue engineering?
Look beyond just marks and curriculum requirements. Try to understand what you truly want from your education and career. It’s never too early to start thinking about your goals. Stay curious, keep learning, and most importantly, never back away from a challenge.
