Redefining Storytelling with AI and Drones

As part of its academic outreach initiative, Apeejay Institute of Mass Communication (AIMC) successfully conducted a two-day workshop on “Digital Filmmaking Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Drone Technology” at Patna Women’s College. The workshop drew enthusiastic participation from 80 students, offering them hands-on exposure to emerging trends in media production and digital storytelling.

The programme commenced with an inaugural session led by Director of AIMC Prof. Sajal Mukherjee, who set an inspiring academic and creative tone for the workshop. In his address, he underscored the increasing relevance of technology-driven practices in contemporary media education. Encouraging students to embrace innovation and interdisciplinary learning, he highlighted how AI and advanced digital tools are transforming the media landscape.

The inaugural session was followed by a series of expert-led lectures designed to blend theory with practical insight. Prof. Mudita Raj delivered an engaging session on “AI in Media,” exploring its growing applications in content ideation, scriptwriting, editing, and post-production. She explained how artificial intelligence is streamlining creative workflows while expanding possibilities for experimentation and efficiency in media projects.

Subsequently, Prof. Naveen Gautam conducted a comprehensive session on digital filmmaking, focusing on visual storytelling techniques, narrative structuring, and the integration of AI tools in film production. His presentation emphasized the convergence of creativity and technology, helping students understand how digital tools can enhance cinematic expression without compromising artistic depth.

A key highlight of the workshop was the practical training session on camera operations and drone cinematography, conducted by Prof. Ankit Kumar Malyan. Students were introduced to professional camera handling techniques, shot composition, and lighting considerations. The drone demonstration particularly captured their interest, as they learned how aerial cinematography can add scale, perspective, and visual dynamism to storytelling. The hands-on experience allowed participants to familiarize themselves with industry-relevant equipment and techniques.

The second day was devoted to experiential learning. Under faculty mentorship, students were divided into groups to conceptualize, script, and shoot short films. Two short films titled “Emoji” and “Batuaa” were ideated and produced during the workshop. This collaborative exercise enabled students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical filmmaking scenarios, fostering creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Faculty members observed that the workshop significantly enhanced students’ technical competencies and creative confidence. Participants expressed keen interest in pursuing further training in AI-enabled media tools and advanced filmmaking methods.

The workshop concluded on a highly positive note, reinforcing the importance of emerging technologies in media education and empowering students to explore innovative, technology-driven approaches to digital content creation.
