Manushree is a class 10 student at Apeejay School, Noida. She has only recently written her first poem, but what a beautiful and thoughtful beginning. Her poem is a delightful read that helps us see how rain touches us even indirectly in myriad ways.

Selected as the Poet of the Week, let us read what the promising debutant has to say. Read edited excerpts:

At what age did you start writing poetry?

I have only recently tried my hand at poetry and ‘Memories of the rain’ is my very first poem. I am excited to continue exploring this art and see where it takes me.

Congratulations! So what inspired you to choose poetry?

The inspiration for my first poem came from a school assignment. I saw it as an opportunity to try out something different. My inspiration for this poem was a beautiful rainy day.

Tell us the thought behind your poem?

I wrote this poem on a mesmerising rainy day. I was sitting by my window, and was thinking about my trip to Mussoorie as it rained. During my stay there, I came across a cute chubby cat. This incident became the inspiration for my poem, as I wanted to capture this story.

Who is your fav poet and what is your fav poem?

Rain on the roof by Coates Kinney is one of my favourite poems because it illustrates how rain is capable of bringing back a thousand memories.

The all time poet’s question: Rhyme or free verse?

I prefer writing in rhyme as it enhances the beauty of the poem and adds to the overall impact on the readers.

Writing poems in the day or night?

I enjoy writing in daylight as it offers my thoughts and imagery a dose of refreshing morning energy.

How does your school help you to write such lovely poems?

The competitions, activities and debates organised by my school have presented me with wonderful opportunities where I can freely express my ideas. By actively participating in these activities, I have been able to develop and enhance my self-confidence. All of this has motivated me to try my hand at poetry.

How do you approach writing a poem? What are your common themes?

With a genuine love for observing nature and animals, my thoughts and ideas are mostly influenced by these fascinating subjects and so is my poetic creation. It took me just an hour to write this poem by the way.

And finally, the best thing about writing poetry for you?

For me, poetry is a powerful way to express my thoughts, emotions, and memories.
