As students conclude their journey through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), it marks not just the end of a phase but the beginning of a confident new chapter. At Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park, young learners are encouraged to explore, reflect, and grow holistically. In this special interview, a recent PYP-5 graduate, Meruzhan Tonoyan, shares personal insights into his transformative learning experience as he moves into MYP.

Which learner profile attribute do you think you developed the most in this class?

Studying at this school, I developed many qualities, but I would single out my skills in working in a team.

Can you share an example of how you showed being a risk-taker or a thinker this year?

I am more of a thinker. For instance, this year I analysed different offers for a long time, and before choosing, I understood which one was more preferable for me. Even when I am playing football, I think about whether to shoot or pass.

How has your school helped you become a better researcher, communicator, or thinker?

My school helped me become a better communicator, researcher, and thinker. I became a better researcher because we studied all subjects in depth at school, and a better communicator. After all, I started communicating with everyone in foreign languages and thinking because before every step, I thought about what was best for me.

What did you learn from the field trip that connected with what you were studying?

Unfortunately, I didn’t participate in any excursions because I joined the class late. I feel I missed out on a great opportunity to explore learning beyond the classroom.

Which transdisciplinary theme do you connect with most, and why?

I like the theme How We Express Ourselves the most because I love being creative! I like drawing, writing stories, and even acting sometimes. It’s fun to show my ideas and feelings in different ways. This theme makes me feel happy because I can be myself. Everyone is different, and I think it’s cool when people share their thoughts and talents. It helps me understand my friends better, too!

How did you apply your learning across different subjects?

Once, we did a project about animals, and I used what I learnt in many subjects. In reading, I looked for facts in books. In writing, I reported on my animal. In science, I learnt what it eats and where it lives. Then, in art, I drew a picture of it. It was fun to use different subjects to learn more!

What is your most memorable learning moment?

My most memorable memory from PYP-5, I think, is entering that school for the first time as a student. Unknown faces, confused looks – everything was new. I thought I wouldn’t adapt and would face difficulties, but everything turned out the opposite. They accepted me as if I had been studying with them since childhood, with no unusual events.
