Breast cancer affects women both in the developed and the developing world. It can occur at any age. It is the most prevalent form of cancer. In India, it accounts for 25% to 31% of all cancers in women, as suggested by research studies. The average age of developing breast cancer has also undergone a significant shift from 50 – 70 years to 30 – 50 years.

Since October is officially recognised as breast cancer awareness month, the Interact Club students of Apeejay School Panchsheel Park recently conducted ‘The Pink Ribbon Project’.

In an interactive online session with Dr. Rekha Khandelwal, a renowned gynaecologist and obstetrician with an experience of over 45 years. She is also a member of Association of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist, Indian Association of Gynaecological Endoscopists and Indian Medical Association (IMA). Praising the awareness spread through the webinar, Dr Rekha mentioned, “Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in women. The earlier the detection, the quicker the recovery.  Therefore, such webinars should be held more frequently to make our women and their family members aware of the symptoms of breast cancer for an early detection and healthy recovery.”

School teachers attended the online session alongside the mothers of the students. They were enlightened by the doctor about the causes and symptoms of breast cancer alongside some preventive measures.

Speaking about the event, teacher in-charge Ms Moumita said, “Project Pink Ribbon was initiated with the sole objective of bringing awareness among women about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. This enriching webinar was attended by teachers and mothers who got an insight into the details of the disease as well as a glimmer of hope that things can be better with proper medical intervention.” She added, “I hope that through such efforts, we can bring about a change in the society. This webinar was a big ray of hope.”
