Here’s how ‘learning by doing’ promotes holistic development

In recent years, Indian schools have witnessed a transformative shift from rote learning to experiential learning. This approach, known as “learning by doing”, emphasises active engagement, hands-on experiences, and practical application of knowledge. By moving away from the traditional memorisation-based methods, learning by doing promotes holistic development.

Schools across India are embracing experiential learning as a more effective alternative. This approach emphasises active participation, collaboration, and hands-on experiences, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications. By engaging in real-world scenarios, students gain a deeper understanding of concepts and develop crucial skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork.

Let’s look at how experiential learning can be integrated into the classroom.

Benefits of experiential learning

Sanya Malhotra, a teacher at Apeejay School International (ASI), an international baccalaureate school in Panchsheel Park, says, “Experiential learning is the need of the hour to learn all the skills needed to survive today. As an educator and a member of the Apeejay group, I feel we are doing the correct thing by training the young mind through the experiential way of learning. This approach opens new avenues for our student communities and helps them discover those areas about themselves that they never thought existed before within themselves.

“Experiential learning contributes toward fostering an inclusive classroom, which is one of the core pedagogies practised by IB and we are very much doing it at our school.”

Learning by doing offers numerous advantages over rote learning. Firstly, it promotes active engagement and ignites students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. By providing opportunities for hands-on experiences within the classroom, students develop a deeper understanding of concepts and retain knowledge more effectively. For instance, during a science class, students can participate in a laboratory experiment where they actively mix chemicals, observe reactions, and draw conclusions based on their observations. This practical experience allows them to grasp scientific principles in a tangible and memorable way, fostering a genuine interest in the subject.

Secondly, learning by doing fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By applying knowledge in real-life situations, students learn to analyse, evaluate, and develop innovative solutions. In a mathematics class, instead of simply solving equations on paper, students can engage in problem-solving activities that require them to apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios. By working in groups, students can collaborate, discuss different approaches, and collectively arrive at solutions. This approach not only enhances their critical thinking abilities but also encourages effective communication and teamwork.

Moreover, experiential learning in the classroom encourages creativity and self-expression. For example, in a language arts class, instead of solely memorising grammar rules, students can engage in activities such as writing stories, creating skits, or participating in debates. By actively using the language in meaningful contexts, students develop their writing and speaking skills while expressing their unique ideas and perspectives.

The shift from rote learning to learning by doing represents a significant transformation in Indian education. By emphasising active engagement, practical application, and critical thinking within the classroom, this approach equips students with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through hands-on experiences and problem-solving activities, students develop a deeper understanding of concepts, cultivate a love for learning, and acquire practical skills that can be applied in real-life situations. As more educators integrate experiential learning into their teaching methods, we can look forward to a future where classrooms become vibrant spaces for exploration, creativity, and holistic development.
