Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023, emphasising the dual nature of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a potent developmental tool and a potential threat if misused, particularly by terrorists. The PM proposed the establishment of a global framework for the ethical use of AI, encompassing protocols for testing and deploying high-risk AI tools. He expressed concerns about the security implications if AI-equipped weaponry were to fall into the hands of terrorist organisations.

Highlighting challenges such as deep fakes, cybersecurity, and data theft, Modi stressed the need for a concerted effort to prevent the misuse of AI. He suggested the creation of international agreements and protocols similar to those existing for various global issues.

PM also unveiled plans for India’s AI mission, aimed at revolutionising the country’s technological landscape and transforming sectors like healthcare. He outlined the potential of AI in revitalising forgotten Indian languages, specifically mentioning the Sanskrit language and the recovery of lost volumes of Vedic mathematics through AI.

He noted that the direction of AI should be guided by human and democratic values. The PM asserted that addressing ethical, economic, and social concerns, including data security and privacy, would increase trust in AI. Focusing on the importance of inclusivity, Modi called for AI to be a global movement, generating credible and transparent information free from bias.

Highlighting India’s commitment to inclusive growth, Modi referred to the development mantra, ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas.’ He outlined the government’s policies and programmes designed with the spirit of “AI for All.” Modi announced the initiation of a National Programme on AI and the upcoming launch of the AI Mission, aimed at harnessing AI’s capabilities for responsible and ethical use in driving social development and inclusive growth.
