The atmosphere crackled with anticipation, the air thick with nostalgia and laughter. It wasn’t the students who poured through the gates that morning; it was their parents, transformed in spirit and attire, ready to relive the golden school days of childhood.

Mothers tied their hair into playful pigtails, skirts neatly pressed, school ties in place, giggling just like the little girls they once were. Not to be outdone, the fathers arrived proudly in school shorts, carrying cartoon-themed lunch boxes and swinging glitter school bags with a swagger that matched their wide grins.

The occasion? A Day at School, organised by Apeejay School, Noida, for classes Nursery to V, was a heartwarming event curated especially for parents to step into their child’s shoes, quite literally. It was a celebration of connection, empathy, and pure, unfiltered joy.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Neha Sharma, School Principal, shared, “I am thrilled to witness such a grand gesture by parents, and their enthusiasm is infectious. I encourage everyone to participate in the activities and fully enjoy the day.”

Sharing about the ideation behind creating such an event, Ms Kavita Luthra, In-charge, Foundational Years at Apeejay School, Noida, said, “It was a unique experience wherein parents stepped into their children’s shoes and followed their routine in school as young learners. This event was designed to give our parents a glimpse into the child’s joyful and holistic learning environment. The parents’ enthusiasm and active participation in every session were overwhelming.”

A parent, Pawan Kathuria, shared, “My child Sourish is in Nursery, and I am living a day out of his life. The experience is extremely overwhelming considering how my child is managing studies with play so wonderfully with the help of the school teachers.”

Once gathered in the common area, the parents, transformed into their inner children, marched joyfully towards the school ground, ready to embrace a nostalgic experience like no other. The school assembly began, not with the usual chorus of young voices, but with parents singing the morning prayer. As the programme unfolded, presentations by fellow students included the news of the day, a thoughtful reflection, a warm poem celebrating Friendship Day, and a note brimming with patriotism; all culminating with the proud rendering of the National Anthem.

From there, it was time for the much-awaited classroom sessions. Parents trooped into their designated rooms, where teachers welcomed them with beaming smiles and structured lessons. And what a sight it was! Fathers and mothers sitting attentively at desks, raising hands, reading aloud and solving puzzles.

Witnessing them learn, narrate, and engage with such enthusiasm was a visual poem in itself. It beautifully epitomised the disciplined yet joyful rhythm of student life, and the meaningful mentorship offered daily by the teaching staff.

Keeping with a similar sentiment, another parent, Rashmi Priyam, whose child Anoma studies in Class II, expressed, “I am reliving my good old school days here, and nothing can ever replace them. Watching the daily routine my child goes through gives me such peace of mind in knowing that she is in safe hands. No wonder her happiness after coming back home testifies to that.”

As the final bell rang for classroom lessons, the excitement in the air soared. With notebooks tucked away and childlike enthusiasm gleaming in their eyes, the parents-turned-students made their way, this time, not towards desks, but towards pure joy. It was time for extracurricular classes.

The first stop was the art class. Brushes dipped in bold colours, they experimented with impression painting, filling sheets with vibrant strokes and whimsical designs. The joy of creating decorated mandalas brought out their artistic sides.

Next came the infectious energy of dance class. With music filling the corridors, parents let loose, grooving to peppy tunes with unreserved happiness. There were twirls, giggles, and synchronised missteps that only added to the charm.

Then it was time for the adrenaline rush — Sports Guru activities. Competitive spirits came alive as teams tugged ropes in a thrilling Tug of War, cheered each other on during Catch the Frisbee, and showcased true sportsmanship. Laughter echoed across the halls.

After witnessing the whole day at school, Hina Gupta, whose daughter, Ishita, studies in Class V, quipped, “Events like these should be organised once a month. I am so relieved to watch my child having a blast at school daily.”

A Day at School wasn’t just an event; it was a soulful experience that united generations, bridged emotional distances, and reminded everyone that childhood, when remembered together, becomes even more magical.
