Oxford Big Read launches competition for schools across India

Oxford University Press (OUP) India has recently unveiled the 5th edition of the Oxford Big Read Global competition, an annual reading contest designed to foster a love for reading among primary and secondary school students. The Oxford Big Read is India’s pioneering and most inclusive extensive reading competition, open to all students in classes 1-9 across schools in India.

It comprises three distinct levels, each catering to specific class groups:

i. Level 1 (classes 1-3): Participants are tasked with designing a captivating book jacket for the book they read. The jacket should include the title, author, an illustration, and a brief two-sentence synopsis of the book.

ii. Level 2 (classes 4-6): Students in this category are required to write an engaging and insightful piece about the book they read. The write-up should encompass the book’s title, author, genre, setting, main characters, likes, dislikes, and potential changes they would make to the story.

iii. Level 3 (classes 7-9): This level calls for participants to write a critical review of an OUP book. They should include the title, author, genre, setting, and main characters in their review or have the option to compare and contrast two books.

How to participate?

To take part in the competition, students need to select any one reader from OUP’s Big Read catalogue and complete the relevant activity based on their class category. Alternatively, they can opt to read an eBook from Oxford Reading Buddy, a digital reading service by OUP that nurtures comprehension skills and fosters a love for reading. Participating schools can also benefit from a complimentary trial of Oxford Reading Buddy, supporting up to 100 students from classes 3 – 4 for three months to enhance their reading experience.

All entries must be submitted through the respective schools, and the deadline for submission is 5th October 2023. It’s important to note that individual entries from parents or children will not be accepted.

Further, the announcement of national-level winners will take place on 30th October 2023, while global winners will be revealed on 30th November 2023. The submitted entries will be evaluated by an expert panel of judges, who will assess them based on creativity, imagination, and originality.

This competition presents students with a wonderful chance to cultivate positive reading habits that will benefit them throughout their lives. Engaging in this competition not only allows them to explore and relish high-quality texts but also nurtures a lifelong passion for reading. Moreover, by participating, students have the exciting opportunity to win gifts and certificates, serving as a constant source of motivation throughout their reading journey.
