In a significant move towards integrating technology into education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) revealed that nearly 8 lakh students have opted for Artificial Intelligence (AI) courses in the 2024-25 academic session. The information was shared by Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Education, during a Lok Sabha session in response to an unstarred question by Gujarat MP Rajeshbhai Chudasama.
Around 7,90,999 students from 4,538 schools have enrolled in AI at the secondary level. Meanwhile, 50,343 students from 944 schools have chosen the subject at the senior secondary level. The AI course, introduced by CBSE in 2019, aims to prepare students for the growing significance of AI in daily life and industries.
The Board offers a 15-hour AI module for class VIII students and a skill-based AI curriculum for classes IX to XIII. The initiative seeks to foster understanding and appreciation of AI applications while building foundational knowledge among students.
Introducing AI as a subject aligns with the National Education Policy’s (2020) vision of equipping students with 21st-century skills. Since its inception, the course has seen a rapid increase in adoption, underscoring the growing interest among students in emerging technologies.
This surge in AI course enrollment reflects the broader trend of digital and tech-oriented education, preparing India’s youth for future career opportunities in a technology-driven world.
