We are in March and celebration of craftsmanship and creativity is a must with National Crochet Month! This is the perfect time to pick up your hooks, unravel some colorful yarn, and create something truly special. Crochet is not just about making scarves and blankets — it’s an art form with endless possibilities. From adorable amigurumi (stuffed toys) and intricate doilies to stylish handbags and trendy crop tops, crochet allows you to craft pieces that are both functional and fashionable. Home decor enthusiasts can experiment with plant hangers, wall tapestries, and cushion covers to give their spaces a cozy, handmade touch.

In recent years, crochet has made a huge comeback in the fashion and home decor industries. Social media is brimming with influencers and designers showcasing stunning crochet outfits, tote bags, and even swimsuits! The “cottagecore” and “boho” aesthetics have fueled this resurgence, making crochet a sought-after skill for those who love a vintage yet contemporary vibe. Nowadays even crochet flowers have taken a toll.

Why crochet? The benefits are endless!

Beyond its artistic appeal, crochet is known for its numerous benefits:

  • Stress Reliever: The rhythmic motion of crocheting helps reduce anxiety and promotes mindfulness.
  • Enhances Creativity: Choosing colors, patterns, and designs fosters artistic expression.
  • Eco-Friendly Fashion: Handmade crochet items reduce reliance on mass-produced, synthetic materials.
  • Handmade Gifts: Personalized crochet gifts hold sentimental value and are cherished by loved ones.
  • Portable & Affordable: Unlike some crafts, crochet requires minimal tools and can be done anywhere!

“I started crocheting in Class VIII as a creative pastime, especially after learning that universities value extracurricular activities. It became both a stress reliever and a way to express myself. My first project was a simple granny square, and I taught myself using online resources. Crochet has helped me develop patience, especially with large projects. Though I crochet less during exams, it still helps me unwind. My best creations include bags and scarves. It’s one of my favourite escapes, shares Manya Verma, a student of DP-2, studying at Apeejay’s IB School, Apeejay School International, Panchsheel Park.

Arisha Gudwani, a student of PYP-5, said that she discovered about crochet on YouTube. “During a vacation at my grandmother’s house, I immediately asked her to teach me. We ordered yarn, and she first showed me how to crochet single chains. Crocheting has since become a fun and fulfilling hobby for me. I’ve gifted many handmade creations to friends and family, and my proudest piece so far is a turtle. Right now, I’m working on a large crochet pillow,” she said.

Whether you join a crochet-along, support local artisans, or start your crochet project, this is the time to celebrate this timeless craft. So, grab your hooks and let your creativity flow — who knows what masterpiece you’ll create?
