Nutrition and Hydration Week is an annual global event dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role of proper nutrition and hydration in maintaining overall health and well-being. Observed every March, this initiative aims to highlight best practices in food and fluid intake, especially in healthcare settings, while also promoting awareness in educational institutions and everyday life.

Nutrition and Hydration Week was launched in 2012 as a collaborative effort among organisations in the healthcare sector, including the National Association of Care Catering (NACC), Hospital Caterers Association (HCA), and the Patient Safety Domain of NHS England. The goal was to improve nutritional care across hospitals, care homes, and other health services while emphasising the importance of food and drink in recovery and general health.

Each year, Nutrition and Hydration Week adopts a theme that aligns with its mission of promoting better health through nutrition. The themes often revolve around topics such as healthy eating habits, the importance of hydration, food safety, and strategies to prevent malnutrition and dehydration in vulnerable populations, including the elderly and hospitalised patients.

Iterating on the importance of nutrition and hydration, Dietician Charu Verma, mother of a student in Apeejay School, Noida explains, “Eating right or eating healthy means consuming a well-balanced diet that provides the body with all the essential nutrients needed for optimal health. This includes all the macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, minerals and drinking an adequate amount of water. It also involves avoiding all the processed foods, sugary beverages, unhealthy fats, and excessive salts.”

Eating is not just about the quantity of food but about the quality and nutritional value of what a person eats. It consists of approximately: Carbohydrates-45-65%, protein- 15-35%, and fats- 10-35%

These proportions depend upon the factors such as age, gender, physical activity level or overall health status.

“The art of mindful eating plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels, promoting weight loss and preventing insulin resistance, a verified feature of metabolic syndrome. Thus downsizing the food consumption, the therapeutic benefits of each meal are maximised and help to improve overall well-being. Focusing on nutrition as a key, the journey can become an empowering pursuit of vitality and longevity,” Ms Verma shared.
