The Apeejay School in Kharghar marked a significant milestone by hosting its inaugural Model United Nations (MUN) on January 12-13, 2024. This event, the first of its kind at the school, offered a dynamic platform for students to engage in critical thinking, and public speaking to deepen their understanding of international affairs. The two-day conference brought together 70 students from various schools across Navi Mumbai, fostering a microcosm of global diplomacy and intellectual exchange.
Emulating two pivotal assemblies – the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) and the All-India Political Party Meet (AIPPM) – the Apeejay School, Kharghar MUN provided students with an immersive experience in addressing and debating real-world issues. The event successfully created an environment that encouraged intellectual growth, global citizenship, and diplomatic acumen.

The inauguration on January 12, 2024, set a tone of solemnity and anticipation. Held in the school’s multipurpose hall, it featured around 70 delegates representing diverse nations including Uganda, Germany, Finland, Poland, China, Pakistan, India, Russia, Vietnam, the US, the UK, Bangladesh, and Gulf Nations. The attire of the participants reflected the seriousness with which they approached their roles, adding to the authenticity of the experience. The ceremony began with the traditional lighting of the lamp and prayers, followed by a welcoming speech from Apeejay School, Kharghar’s Principal, Ms Tejaswini Katdare. Her words set the stage for the ensuing debates, charging the atmosphere with enthusiasm and expectation.
Harsh Malhotra and Agrima Gupta brilliantly led the UNCSW as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson respectively, while Agya Rai effectively steered the AIPPM discussions in the role of Chairperson.
Debate Sessions and Outcomes
The UNCSW session focused on advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls. Through various formats like unmoderated and moderated caucuses, delegates engaged in meaningful discussions on issues such as gender-based violence and the wage gap. A key outcome was the passing of Working Paper 1.1, advocating for the empowerment of women through various initiatives.

In contrast, the AIPPM session dealt with the pressing issue of child labour in India. Delegates representing different political parties presented multifaceted views on this topic, discussing factors such as poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. The consensus pointed towards the government’s role in eradicating child labor through education, poverty alleviation, and stringent law enforcement.
Student Reflections and Feedback
The event not only provided a platform for academic growth but also fostered personal development. Students reflected on the importance of gender equality and political efficacy in modern society. The experience was an eye-opener to the complexities of policymaking and governance.

The first edition of the MUN at Apeejay School, Kharghar was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all participants.
