In a testament to its dedication to holistic student development, Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar recently orchestrated a comprehensive Cleanliness Week, involving about 100 students from the National Service Scheme (NSS) wing. The initiative aligned with the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ program is a key component of the Swachh Bharat Mission led by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

The NSS volunteers, driven by a sense of social responsibility, engaged in a thorough cleaning campaign across various college facilities. The concerted efforts were directed towards enhancing the cleanliness of spaces vital to academic and communal life, including the college staff room, library, and computer labs.
Expressing her delight at the proactive participation of NSS volunteers, Dr. Neerja Dhingra, Principal of ACFA, commended the students for their enthusiasm and dedication to the cause of cleanliness. She emphasised, “Such initiatives are important in instilling a sense of responsibility and emotional connection to society and the nation among students.”
Dr. Dhingra acknowledged the pivotal role played by Dr. Simki Dev, Dean of NSS Wing, in motivating and guiding students throughout the cleanliness drive. The NSS Wing, under Dr. Dev’s leadership, has consistently played a vital role in fostering a spirit of civic duty and social awareness among the student community.

The event not only contributed to the physical cleanliness of the campus but also served as a valuable educational experience for students, emphasising the broader implications of individual actions on the collective well-being of society. The initiative reaffirmed the college’s commitment to nurturing responsible and socially conscious citizens, beyond academic excellence.
Bhavini, a B.Sc. Economics Semester 5 students says, “In cultivating a mindset of cleanliness, we nurture a positive habit that extends its benefits to the body, mind, and the surrounding environment. It is a practice that promotes happiness, fosters health, embraces simplicity, maintains neatness, and ultimately contributes to a delightful existence.”
Nisar Akhtar Gul, a 3 year BPT student expresses, “Beyond mere appearances, cleanliness is a reflection of a mindset characterised by order, discipline, and a profound respect for oneself and others. It goes beyond the superficial, embodying a commitment to well-being and a harmonious coexistence.”
Kreetina Rai, a 3 semester MA English students said, “Recognising that cleanliness and order are not inherent instincts, but rather matters of education, we understand that, like many great things in life, they require cultivation. By developing a taste for cleanliness, we contribute to a society where these virtues are valued and upheld.”
