To sensitise children about gender and promote inclusivity, Apeejay School, Noida, organised a ‘Gender Sensitivity’ workshop this month in the school auditorium. Conducted by Shruti Aggarwal, PGT Psychology, Apeejay Noida, the event was attended by students from classes VI-VIII.
At the event, the students learnt about the problems associated with gender stereotypes in society leading to discrimination. “The session began with explaining to students the difference between gender and sex. They were also told about the different kinds of gender as well as the stereotypes associated with them,” Aggarwal said.
To make the session more interactive, Aggarwal also came up with some activities. Students were shown some pictures of people subverting clothing stereotypes and were asked to interpret them. In another activity, they were also asked to think of the first person that came to their mind for the words ‘strong’ and ‘beautiful’ to understand how social conditioning makes us associate the former with men and the latter with women.

The workshop was followed by an interesting Q&A session with the students where they clarified all doubts related to gender. It was a great opportunity for them to come together, share ideas, and have discussions on such a sensitive topic.
AK Sharma, principal, Apeejay School Noida, said, “Respect people regardless of their gender identity. When we give respect and space to other genders, we are helping to create a more inclusive society for everyone. We are breaking down barriers and making it easier for everyone to reach their full potential. So, let’s all make a commitment to being more gender-sensitive in our daily lives.”
