Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday clarified that the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 does not impose Hindi on any state. His remarks came amid Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the policy, which he attributed to political reasons. “We have never said in NEP 2020 that only Hindi will be there. We have only stated that education will be based on the mother tongue. In Tamil Nadu, it will be Tamil,” Pradhan told reporters.

His statement comes in response to the ongoing disagreement between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre regarding the implementation of the NEP and the three-language policy.

Pradhan emphasised that the NEP promotes all regional languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Odia, and Punjabi, giving them equal importance. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin hadearlier argued that translation technology has already removed language barriers in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
