The story follows twins Lindy and Kris, whose discovery of an old ventriloquist dummy—Slappy—kicks off a series of strange and unsettling events. While Lindy quickly becomes attached to her dummy, Kris feels left out until she gets one of her own. But soon, the dummies seem to act on their own, causing accidents, insults, and destruction. As the line between prank and possession blurs, Kris begins to suspect that Slappy is far more than a puppet.

Characters With a Voice of Their Own
Lindy and Kris are classic Stine protagonists—curious, competitive, and caught in a sibling rivalry that adds a relatable emotional undercurrent. Their growing tension over the dummies heightens the suspense, as readers are never quite sure who is responsible for the chaos. Slappy, the real star of the book, is a masterstroke of creepy characterization: wooden in form but disturbingly lifelike in spirit. He becomes the perfect face of fear—mocking, malicious, and memorable.

What Makes It a Goosebumps Favourite
Stine taps into the uncanny valley with expert flair—turning a childhood toy into a source of dread. The pacing is tight, with short chapters ending on cliffhangers that keep readers eagerly flipping pages. There’s also a clever balance of horror and humor that prevents the scares from becoming too intense, making it ideal for readers aged 9–12. The final reveal delivers a classic Goosebumps twist that resets expectations and leaves you with goosebumps of your own.

A Puppet Show of Pure Terror
This book helped define the Goosebumps brand, with Slappy becoming one of the most iconic villains in the series. Stine’s writing is simple yet vivid, and he uses everyday settings—a living room, a backyard—to amplify the sense of normalcy turned nightmare. The theme of things not being what they seem is central to the book, making it both a spooky and psychologically intriguing read.

Verdict:

With a strong plot, great pacing, and one of R.L. Stine’s most enduring villains, Night of the Living Dummy is a must-read for young horror fans and a highlight of the Goosebumps collection.
