The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently introduced new regulations called the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 (GMER-23). One of the key proposals in these regulations is the implementation of a common counseling process for admissions to graduate courses in all medical institutions across the country.
This common counseling will be based on the merit list of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG). The aim of the said process is to streamline the admission procedure and ensure transparency and fairness in the selection of candidates for medical courses.
Counselling shall entirely be based on the seat matrix provided by NMC, the common counselling may have multiple rounds as may be necessary. In addition to this, the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) shall publish guidelines for the conduct of common counselling and the designated authority under section 17 shall conduct the counselling in conformity with the published guidelines.
Further, the government will appoint a designated authority for the counselling and decide, notify its agency and method for all undergraduate seats.
