The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), in collaboration with the Election Commission (EC) and the Ministry of Education, has initiated an effort to combat voter apathy, particularly among the youth. These partners have formally agreed upon a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the objective of introducing electoral literacy in educational institutes nationwide.

This MoU outlines plans to integrate voter awareness into the national curriculum, starting from classes VI through XII in all schools, with the intention of eventually extending this initiative to colleges and universities. The revised curriculum is expected to encourage greater participation in the democratic process.

As per a statement from the Ministry of Education, students will soon be educated about their future role and responsibilities as voters in the election process. This innovative approach is aimed at nurturing a generation of conscientious and well-informed voters who understand the significance of engaging in elections.

The initiative also targets to expand the reach of the EC’s flagship programme, Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), into educational institutes. This framework will involve a combination of structured curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities to engage students in matters related to effective voting.
