Kajal Shukla is currently pursuing journalism and mass communication at Apeejay Stya University, Gurugram. She has completed her schooling from Apeejay School, Panchsheel Park, where she  first discovered my love for communication. From participating in assemblies and stage events to observing how stories influence people, she slowly realised that journalism is more than gathering information — it is a way to inform, connect, and inspire society. This understanding sparked her interest and encouraged her to pursue the same. Read edited excerpts of her interview:

Why did you select Apeejay Stya University for this journey?

Apeejay has always been an important part of my academic journey, so choosing Apeejay Stya University felt like a natural decision. The university offers a strong combination of industry-focused learning, experienced faculty, and practical exposure, which is essential for anyone entering the media field. I wanted a place that would not just teach me journalism, but also train me to practice it confidently — and ASU was the perfect fit.

How has your learning experience at ASU shaped your understanding of media and ethical journalism?

Apeejay Stya University helped me understand that journalism is not only about reporting events — it is about doing so with honesty, responsibility, and empathy. Through classes, discussions, and newsroom-style activities, I learned the importance of accuracy, fairness, and ethical storytelling.
This environment has shaped the way I approach news and helped me see journalism as a profession that carries both power and responsibility.

Can you share a project or activity that significantly contributed to your growth as a budding journalist?

One of the most enriching experiences has been working on community radio projects. From scripting and recording to taking expert bytes and interacting with students from different schools, every step taught me something new. The sessions on women’s health and sanitation were especially meaningful because they showed me how journalism can directly contribute to social awareness. This experience boosted my confidence and strengthened my field-reporting skills.

How has the curriculum and practical training at ASU enhanced your writing and reporting skills?

The curriculum at ASU is very hands-on.  We learn through news writing tasks, radio segments, video reports, and editing practice, which gives us a real newsroom experience. With continuous feedback from faculty, I have improved my clarity, storytelling, and ability to work under deadlines. These practical sessions have made me more comfortable both on camera and behind the mic.

How do you see your learnings at ASU preparing you for the real media industry?
Apeejay has given me the confidence and skill set needed to enter the media world. Through real assignments, ethical grounding, and practical exposure, I feel prepared for the fast-paced environment of newsrooms. My goal is to work with a reputed media organisation where I can report meaningful stories and contribute to society.  The strong foundation I received at ASU will always guide me in this journey.
