Given that, in Hindi, we write as we speak, some students find it difficult to comprehend the grammar. This happens for several reasons even though it is a vastly spoken language in our country. First, Hindi grammar has features like verbs, gender and case system, this can be different in other languages that may be spoken at home.

Second, there are thousands of dialects, students who grow up speaking vernacular languages may find Hindi challenging to understand. Also, Hindi is written in Devanagari script. Students used to writing in Dravidian or English can end up making mistakes.

According to Usha Agarwal, who teaches Hindi at Apeejay School, Kharghar, improving grammar among students requires a multifaceted approach that includes continuous practice, varied teaching methods, and an understanding of the foundational elements of the language.

She shared some strategies to enhance grammar learning

Continuous Reading and Writing Practice: Regular exposure to reading and writing helps reinforce grammatical structures in context. It allows students to naturally absorb the rules and applications of grammar without the monotony of rote memorisation.

Inductive-Deductive Method: This method combines the observation of grammatical rules in use (inductive) with the teaching of explicit rules (deductive), providing a comprehensive learning experience that addresses both recognition and usage.

Interactive Grammar Games: Incorporating games focused on grammar can make learning more engaging and enjoyable for students. Games help reinforce grammatical concepts through fun, interactive challenges that stimulate students’ interest and retention.

Emphasis on Linguistic Accuracy: Students must learn the importance of writing words in their correct form, along with correct spelling, sentence structure, and the proper use of punctuation marks. Focusing on these details helps improve the clarity and effectiveness of their communication.

Weekly Practice on Various Topics: Diversifying the grammatical topics covered each week can prevent monotony and bolster the students’ ability to handle different aspects of the language effectively.

Intensive Language Studies: Deep dives into the elements of language such as sounds, words, sentences, and their relationships can provide students with a better understanding of how language functions. This theoretical knowledge supports practical application and mastery.

“Implementing these approaches in a balanced and consistent manner can significantly enhance students’ grammar skills, making them more proficient and confident in their use of the language,” the educator shared.
