Learning English may seem slightly complex in the beginning, especially when it is not one’s mother tongue. However, you can get a good grip on the language with constant practice and dedication. This can eventually help students improve communication, understand textbooks better, and score well in exams.

For beginners, here are some simple tips from Namrata Sharma, Headmistress-Primary Wing, Apeejay School, Model Town, to learn the language:

  • Practise the four core skills: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Be in an environment where English is constantly spoken so you can learn passively.
  • Listen to news, radio shows, and talk shows in English. Students can also download free listening apps where they can listen to stories. Watch shows in English.
  • The next best way to learn the language is by speaking. Do not be afraid of making mistakes. Take your teachers’ help in incorporating new vocabulary words. Students can use recorder apps to speak, listen and improve pronunciation and diction. Taking part in elocution activities can be a great confidence booster.
  • Read, read, and read. The more you read, the more will be your proficiency. Newspapers are also worth reading. Not only can you improve your English, but you’ll also learn about local and national events.
  • Maintain a notebook of new words you learn. Use them in sentences as many times as you can.
  • Start writing small notes. To begin with, you can keep a personal diary where you can pen down your thoughts in English. Gradually, students can improve and upgrade to writing personal blogs — views on social issues, and articles.
