Recently, Apeejay Stya University (ASU) Gurugram organised a special programme to recognise and celebrate the contributions of our housekeeping staff—those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain a clean and safe environment for all. This initiative was undertaken by the NSS and Rotaract Club of ASU, as a part of the University’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity, social responsibility, and community engagement.

The event began with a warm welcome of all by Dr Vijay Kumar, Programme Coordinator of the NSS ASU. He mentioned the University’s vision of ‘Man making and Nation Building’ which talks about inclusion of all in the process of development and exclusion of none. He further mentioned that the vision is being applied at the ground under the visionary and humane leadership Mrs Sushma Paul Berlia, Chairman, Apeejay Stya & Svran Group, Chancellor Apeejay Stya University, and Chairman, Apeejay Education, who always ensure that all University fraternity, including the support staff gets due respect and care.

His welcome address was followed by addresses from distinguished University members. Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Registrar of the University, spoke about the University’s larger vision of engaging with marginalised communities and how such programmes are steps towards building a compassionate campus culture. Prof. Vimala Veeraraghavan addressed the need to humanise our interactions with support staff and encouraged students to treat them with empathy and dignity. She also talked about the Counselling Centre ‘s services whose benefits may be taken by all staff of the University.

Prof. Sanjay Ahirwal, Dean, Students’ Welfare, acknowledged the silent yet significant role of the housekeeping staff in upholding the dignity and hygiene of the campus. He emphasised the importance of recognising their presence and creating avenues for their personal and professional growth.

The day also showcased an interesting student skit themed  “हम भी बढ़ना चाहते हैं” – one of the key highlight of the programme. The thought-provoking skit was prepared under the guidance of Dr. Sangeeta Tanjea, faculty in School of Design and Visual Arts, ASU. Students fantastically enacted and the performance creatively showcased the everyday struggles, aspirations, and dignity of housekeeping staff, highlighting their dreams of growth and societal acceptance. The performance was deeply moving and received heartfelt appreciation from all present.
