Meet the dynamic duo from Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, Jalandhar, whose passion for chess is as remarkable as their achievements. Riddhi Khanna and Namish Khanna, aged 12 and 10 respectively, are not your ordinary siblings—they are rising stars in the world of chess. In a candid telephonic conversation, they shared insights into their journey, balancing academics with chess, and the invaluable support they receive from their school.
Early beginnings and the unwavering support from school:
The journey into the world of chess began early for Riddhi and Namish. Introduced to the game by their mother, also an Apeejay alumni, at tender ages, they soon found themselves engrossed in its intricacies. “We used to practise chess daily with our father,” shares Namish, reflecting on their beginnings. From their cosy home battles to competitive arenas, their love for the game only grew stronger.

Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg, has been a cornerstone in their chess odyssey. Understanding the demands of both academics and chess, the school has provided unwavering support. “If there is ever an important tournament clashing with exams, the school ensures we can focus on both,” explains Riddhi. With the guidance of their chess teacher, and the backing of the school administration, they navigate their dual pursuits seamlessly.
Balancing academics, chess, and dreams of future greatness
Preparing for major tournaments requires dedication and discipline. “We take chess coaching, play with each other, and constantly work on improving,” says Namish, shedding light on their training routine. For Riddhi and Namish, the biggest challenge lies in balancing rigorous preparation with academic commitments—a feat they accomplish with aplomb.
Drawing inspiration from chess legends like Vishwanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen, Riddhi and Namish aspire to leave their mark on the game. They recall memorable victories with pride, cherishing each milestone along their journey. “Winning the state championship was an out-of-the-world moment,” beams Namish, his joy palpable over the phone.
Sibling rivalry takes on a new dimension on the chessboard for Riddhi and Namish. Competing in their home tournaments, they push each other to excel, all under the watchful eye of their arbiter—mom. “Playing with Riddhi keeps me grounded and inspires me to think before making a move,” admits Namish, highlighting the symbiotic nature of their relationship.

Their success at the recent Punjab state championship—Riddhi securing the 2nd runner-up position in the U-14 Girls category and Namish emerging as the State Champion in the U-14 Boys category—speaks volumes about their talent and determination. When asked about their secret to success, they attribute it to meticulous preparation, strategic gameplay, and invaluable support from Apeejay School.
As they bask in the glory of their achievements, Riddhi and Namish remain grounded, with their sights set on even greater heights. With dreams of becoming grandmasters and world champions, they continue to hone their skills, fueled by passion and ambition.
Beyond the chessboard, Riddhi finds solace in reading, while Namish explores his musical talents through singing and playing the piano. Despite their diverse interests, chess remains their common thread, binding them together in pursuit of excellence.
In a world where success is often measured by trophies and accolades, Riddhi and Namish Khanna stand out not just as chess champions, but as shining examples of dedication, perseverance, and the unwavering support of Apeejay School, Mahavir Marg. As they embark on their next chess adventure, one thing is certain—their journey has only just begun.
