Knowing the importance of learning excel, the Apeejay School of Management (ASM), Dwarka recently conducted an Excel-based Corporate Finance Workshop for PGDM first-year students. The workshop aimed to equip students with practical financial skills crucial for improving their employability in today’s competitive job market. A total of 35 students participated, including finance elective students and those from other specialisations who registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The workshop covered key financial concepts essential for understanding corporate finance and widely used in the financial industry. The session focused on capital budgeting evaluation techniques such as Internal Rate of Return, Net Present Value, Modified Internal Rate of Return, and Discounted Payback Period. It also included discussions on the cost of equity capital using the Dividend Discount Model, capital structure analysis through EBIT-EPS analysis, and inventory management techniques like Economic Order Quantity and Reorder Level calculations. A hands-on approach was adopted to ensure students could apply these techniques effectively in Excel, enhancing their financial modelling and analytical skills.

The workshop provided participants with an in-depth understanding of financial modelling in Excel, a skill highly valued in finance, consulting, and corporate management roles. The interactive nature of the session enabled students to apply theoretical financial concepts in a practical setting, develop proficiency in Excel-based financial analysis, and enhance their ability to interpret financial data for decision-making.

The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. Many students appreciated the practical insights gained and the opportunity to work on real-world financial problems using Excel. The structured format, clarity of concepts, and interactive approach were particularly praised.

The successful organisation of the Excel-based Corporate Finance Workshop marks a significant step in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements. The workshop has contributed to their professional development and preparedness for finance-related careers by equipping students with essential financial analysis skills. Given the success of this session, similar workshops may be organised further to strengthen students’ competencies in financial modelling and analysis.

Sharing his thoughts, Ashutosh Pandey, a first-year PGDM student, mentioned, “The workshop was an eye-opener. Applying financial concepts in Excel enhanced my understanding and confidence. The hands-on approach and structured learning made it engaging and insightful. Looking forward to more such sessions.”
