In a bid to strengthen practical learning and bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and industry experience, the institute organised a market visit tailored to the specific requirements of each design course. The primary aim of this initiative was to help budding designers develop a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics, including emerging trends, consumer preferences, material availability, and pricing strategies.

For the Interior Design students from GDP III Semester and EDD I Semester, the visit to Kotla Furniture Market turned into an insightful learning experience — a living laboratory where theory came alive through real-world exposure. Every lane of the market offered valuable lessons in design, materials, and functionality.

Students explored a wide range of materials — from wood, plywood, laminates, and veneers to innovative substitutes and sustainable alternatives. This hands-on experience enabled them to understand the balance between cost, durability, and aesthetics that modern interiors demand. The visit provided a tangible sense of how material choices influence the overall look and longevity of a design project.

The lighting section proved to be another highlight of the visit, showcasing a variety of ambient, task, and decorative lighting fixtures. Students observed how lighting extends beyond illumination to play a crucial role in defining mood, depth, and spatial character within interior spaces.

Through direct interaction with vendors and craftsmen, students learned the art of professional communication and negotiation — essential skills for any design practitioner. The experience also helped them refine their material vocabulary and gain confidence in making informed design decisions based on availability, functionality, and budget considerations.

Reflecting on the experience, Shreya Pandey, a student of GDP – Interior Design, III Semester, shared, “This wasn’t just a visit—it was an eye-opener. It felt like stepping into a designer’s toolkit, where every sample sparked an idea. The buzz of the market, the textures under my fingers, and the varied glow of lighting fixtures gave me not just knowledge but inspiration to create. I felt the market as an open-air studio, leaving a newfound appreciation for materials in my design.”

Overall, the market visit succeeded in transforming theoretical concepts into meaningful, experiential learning. It encouraged students to observe, question, and absorb real-time insights that would later guide their design process. The initiative not only enhanced their understanding of materials and market trends but also nurtured creativity, critical thinking, and professional readiness — hallmarks of a well-rounded designer.
