In a world where speed and accuracy are key, mathematics can often feel overwhelming for students. Parents, too, find it challenging to help their children grasp complex math concepts using traditional methods. This is where Vedic Math, an ancient Indian system of calculations, offers a refreshing solution for both learners and caregivers.
Vedic Mathematics traces its roots to the Atharvaveda, one of the four Vedas, and was revived in the early 20th century by Bharati Krishna Tirtha. It is based on 16 sutras (formulas) and 13 sub-sutras (sub-formulas) that simplify everything from basic arithmetic to algebra and calculus. These principles encourage mental math and intuitive thinking, making calculations faster and more accurate.
Ms Ritu Bhambhani, PRT Math, Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, states, “The primary objective of introducing Vedic Math in school is to simplify mathematical learning and develop faster, more accurate problem-solving skills among students. Rooted in ancient Indian wisdom, Vedic Math nurtures logical thinking, enhances mental agility, and reduces dependence on conventional, time-consuming methods.”
For students, this means a smarter way to approach problems. Long multiplication, complex divisions, or solving square roots can be done in just a few steps — or even in the mind — without writing lengthy solutions.
The teacher further explained, “In addition to classroom integration, our school has been conducting Aryabhatta Math classes for a long time as a specialised initiative to further support and strengthen students’ numerical aptitude. These sessions are designed to prepare students for competitive platforms and to instil a deeper understanding and love for mathematics from an early age.”
This emphasis on continuous practice and application has proven effective in nurturing confident, analytical, and proficient learners.
For parents, Vedic Math offers reassurance. It equips children with logical strategies that are both fun and effective. As the education system becomes increasingly competitive, these techniques provide an extra edge, especially in entrance tests or Olympiads.
Reflecting on its growing relevance, the teacher noted, “Vedic Math is gaining traction because it addresses the needs of both speed and understanding in today’s competitive academic environment. Its techniques simplify complex operations and foster logical, analytical thinking. Today, educators and parents seek more effective and engaging ways to teach math, and Vedic Math offers a time-tested solution that blends well with modern curricula.”
Today, schools across India and abroad are incorporating Vedic Math into their curricula or offering it as a supplementary learning tool. It’s not just a method — it’s a mindset shift that makes math more accessible and enjoyable for all.
As for the right time to introduce these techniques, the teacher shares, “Vedic Math is best introduced once students have developed a foundational understanding of basic arithmetic operations and are cognitively ready to explore patterns and mental strategies. At Apeejay School, we take a playful and engaging approach by presenting Vedic Math as an enjoyable exploration of numbers.”
By blending ancient wisdom with modern learning needs, Vedic Mathematics empowers both parents and students. It turns Math from a daunting subject into a skill to be mastered — and even loved.
