Little Learners Discover the Science of Colours at Apeejay School, Saket

Kindergarten students explore light and colour through an exciting hands-on ‘Rainbow on a Plate’ experiment

Bringing together curiosity, creativity and joyful learning, Apeejay School, Saket recently organised a delightful “Rainbow on a Plate” activity for its Kindergarten students. The colourful experiment transformed the classroom into a mini science lab where young learners turned into enthusiastic budding scientists — eager to explore how colours mix, move and create magic.

The engaging activity involved using vibrant, edible gems arranged in a circle on a plate. As water was gently poured over them, children watched in awe as the colours slowly dissolved and travelled towards the centre, forming a beautiful rainbow-like pattern. What seemed like simple fun was in fact an introduction to fascinating scientific concepts like colour diffusion, water absorption and the behaviour of light.

Making science playful and meaningful

At this tender age, children learn best by experiencing and observing things firsthand. Activities like these help them understand that science is not confined to textbooks — it exists all around them. The excitement on their faces was a reminder of how experiential learning plays a crucial role in shaping imagination and critical thinking.

Teachers guided students as they made predictions, observed carefully and described the changes they saw. These small steps nurture scientific vocabulary and encourage young learners to ask questions — a habit that strengthens lifelong learning.

A splash of creativity and confidence

Apart from science, the activity also enriched children’s fine motor skills as they arranged the gems neatly and worked patiently during the experiment. They were encouraged to express what they observed, helping them build communication skills and self-confidence. The joy of accomplishment, when the rainbow finally appeared, made every child feel like a winner.

Apeejay School, Saket continually focuses on integrating play-based learning with real-world knowledge. Through such hands-on experiences, students learn to work collaboratively, celebrate discoveries and understand that every question leads to a new learning journey.

The Rainbow on a Plate activity truly filled the environment with laughter, surprise and wonder — showing that early exposure to science can spark deep curiosity about how things work. As students clapped and admired the magical rainbow on their plates, they were unknowingly laying the foundation for future scientific thinking.
