The Junior Kindergarten children of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, spent a lively morning exploring the idea of shadow art. It was a hands-on activity that turned a simple concept into a moment of joy, curiosity, and learning.
Teachers set up a space where a light source and everyday objects became tools for discovery. The children watched how shapes stretched, shrank, and danced on the wall as they moved their hands or placed objects in front of the light.
The moment they realised that they could change the shadow by changing the object or the angle, their excitement grew. Many began creating animals, trees, and characters using their hands. Others experimented with toys to see how each one behaved in the light.
Building early learning skills
This activity strengthened more than creativity. It helped children understand cause and effect. They saw that every movement produced a new shape. It also encouraged them to think visually, compare sizes, and build simple ideas about how light travels.
Teachers guided the children to observe. Some children guessed what shape would appear before placing an object near the light. Others tried to make the shadow match a shape their friends had created.
Why activities like this matter
Young learners absorb best when they experiment freely. Shadow art gave them a safe space to try, imagine, and express. It turned science into play. They were learning how to observe, ask questions, and make sense of what they see.
The shadow art activity ended with cheerful faces and a sense of achievement, proving once again that simple ideas often spark the brightest learning moments.
