Preparing for any exam takes time if students want to ace it. While listening to the class lectures, doing assignments, and being regular with self-study are important, how the students need to study is just as vital. More so, when it comes to the Board exams – be it the CBSE, IB, or ICSE. Students need to remember that every subject and every mark counts.
Between general study habits and specific tips for excelling, it’s crucial to focus on effective study strategies, especially when it comes to subjects like Geography. This involves not only understanding theoretical content but also mastering practical skills like map locating and labelling, which are essential for success in exams. Developing these skills requires a structured approach, blending regular reviews with hands-on practice, ensuring that students are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of Geography exams efficiently.
According to Shilpa Maitra, a Geography teacher at Apeejay School, Faridabad, when it comes to senior classes students can’t afford to lose even a single mark. “Therefore, it is important that they improve map skills that include locating and labeling for a perfect score,” Maitra said and added that scoring a perfect score in a map locating and labeling in Geography requires a good understanding of geographical features like mountains, rivers, countries, states and their capitals, and natural vegetation to name a few.
And how do students achieve this? The educator shared a few tips that can help.
1. Study the world and India maps regularly. It will help students to familiarise themselves with the location of countries, continents, oceans, and major cities. Use a political map to understand where the countries and the continents are.
2. There is a reason why the adage: Practice makes a man perfect is the go-to mantra. The students need to practice map work regularly by locating and labeling. Students can play quiz games, map pointing games, or practice political maps to test and improve their skills.
3. Using Mnemonics will help students to remember the location of countries, rivers, lakes, or cities. Creating an association or visualisation that will help them to recall specific locations quickly.
4. If the student is practicing how to locate different regions, break down the world map into regions and focus on one region at a time. This can help students to concentrate on specific areas and improve their accuracy to learn Geography.
For example, to teach a student about Asia’s geography effectively, start with one region, such as East Asia, including countries like China and Japan. Use a region-specific map to focus their study, which helps in managing the volume of information. Engage them with questions about country locations and capitals, and incorporate interactive activities like coloring and placing markers. After mastering East Asia, gradually introduce other regions such as Southeast Asia and Central Asia, employing the same detailed approach. This method ensures comprehensive learning by focusing on one area at a time.
5. Review and reflect after each practice session. Review your performance by identifying areas where you made mistakes and work on improving your knowledge of those locations. Students should check their practice maps with their teachers. They should ask for tips on how they can improve on areas where they have made mistakes.
6. On the day of the exam, stay calm and focused. Take your time to think before locating and labeling any place on the map to avoid making careless mistakes.
“Remember that achieving a perfect score in map work in Geography requires consistent practice and an understanding of geographical features,” Maitra said in conclusion.
