Art galleries serve as vital educational platforms for design students, offering them exposure to various artistic movements, styles, and techniques. Organising visits to art galleries enhances students’ understanding of art history, cultural narratives, and contemporary visual expressions. These visits allow students to explore diverse artistic interpretations, helping them develop their creative and analytical abilities. A recent visit by students from the School of Design and Visual Arts, Apeejay Stya University, to the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi, provided an enriching experience that underscored the significance of such excursions.
For design and visual arts students, direct engagement with artworks is crucial for expanding their artistic knowledge and perspective. Art galleries present a curated collection of masterpieces, enabling students to study the evolution of art, visual storytelling, and design principles in practice. These visits also serve as inspiration, encouraging students to experiment with new techniques and styles. Moreover, exposure to historical and contemporary artworks helps students contextualise their own work within broader artistic traditions and innovations.

A group of 20 students from the School of Design and Visual Arts, Apeejay Stya University, recently visited NGMA, New Delhi. This visit provided them with a profound learning experience, allowing them to closely examine an extensive collection of artworks by some of the most celebrated artists in India.
The students had the opportunity to explore masterpieces by renowned artists such as Nicholas Roerich and Amrita Sher-Gil, among others. These works displayed a variety of artistic styles, historical influences, and cultural narratives, offering students valuable insights into modern and contemporary art. The visit enabled them to analyse various artistic techniques, compositions, and the evolution of visual arts over time.
By observing the works of legendary artists firsthand, students gained a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of fine arts and design. The visit stimulated their creative thinking, inspiring them to integrate different artistic elements into their own work. Additionally, interacting with the museum’s exhibits and curatorial displays enhanced their critical understanding of art movements and their significance in society.

Organising visits to art galleries is essential for design students as it broadens their creative vision and strengthens their artistic foundation. The visit to NGMA proved to be an enlightening experience for the students of Apeejay Stya University, reinforcing their passion for art and design. Such educational excursions should be encouraged regularly to provide students with real-world artistic exposure and deeper engagement with visual culture.
