Jammu & Kashmir, often called the ‘Crown of India, is located in the northernmost part of the country. The state spans a latitude of approximately 32° 17′ N to 36° 10′ N and a longitude of approximately 73° 26′ E to 80° 30′. It is known for its breathtaking mountains, peaceful lakes, and beautiful valleys. The region shares its borders with the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and its neighbouring countries, Pakistan and China.

According to the 2011 Census, Jammu & Kashmir had a population density of 124 people per square kilometre. The region has a diverse population, including communities like Kashmiris, Dogras, Gujjars, and Ladakhis.

Total land area

·         The total geographical area of Jammu & Kashmir is 2,22,236 square kilometres. This includes:

·         78,114 sq. km under Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)

·         37,555 sq. km under Aksai Chin, administered by China

·         The remaining 1,06,567 sq. km makes up the current Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh

Jammu & Kashmir is home to many languages. The principal languages spoken include: Urdu (official language), Dogri, Kashmiri, Pahari, Punjabi, Ladakhi, Balti, Gojri, and Shina.

Climate

The climate of Jammu & Kashmir varies greatly:

·         Jammu plains have a sub-tropical climate with hot summers and mild winters.

·         Kashmir Valley enjoys a temperate climate with cool summers and snowy winters.

·         Ladakh has a semi-arid to arctic climate, with very cold winters and short summers.

Folk music and dances like Rouf in Kashmir and Ladakhi mask dances are popular. Festivals like Eid, Baisakhi, Navratri, and Hemis are celebrated with great enthusiasm.

According to Ms Amrita Pandey, who teaches Geography at Apeejay School, Nerul, to classes IX and X, the State is referred to as a land of contracts due to the unique climate. “Jammu has a subtropical climate with hot summers, heavy monsoons, and cool “Dadu” winds at night. The Kashmir Valley, shielded by mountains, enjoys mild summers and snowy winters due to western disturbances. Ladakh, known as a “Cold Desert,” experiences extreme cold, arid conditions, and minimal rainfall, with temperatures dropping to -40°C, as it lies in the Himalayas’ rain shadow.

Food and cuisine

The cuisine of the State reflects the region’s cultural richness and geographical diversity, broadly divided into Kashmiri, Dogri, and Ladhaki cuisines.

Kashmiri cuisine is known for its royal and aromatic flavours, influenced by Persian and Central Asian styles. Dogri cuisine from the Jammu region offers bold and robust flavours, focusing on simple, hearty dishes. Ladakhi cuisine is influenced by the region’s high-altitude, harsh climate, and Buddhist culture, resulting in simple yet hearty dishes designed to provide warmth and nourishment.

The educator also shared that J&K’s geographical divisions significantly shape its rich cultural diversity, blending Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist traditions. “Jammu, influenced by Dogra culture, features unique customs, language, and festivals. The Kashmir Valley, with historical ties to Central Asia and the Middle East, showcases strong Islamic influences in its art, architecture, and traditions. Ladakh, known for its Buddhist heritage, highlights distinct monasteries and festivals. The region’s varied climate also impacts social and economic activities, notably in agriculture and tourism, especially during spring in Kashmir Valley,” Ms Pandey explained.

Jammu & Kashmir is not just a place of natural beauty; it teaches us the value of harmony and resilience, offering a more profound understanding of India’s vast heritage.
