Balancing academics with a serious musical pursuit is no small task. For many young artists, especially those in college, the challenge lies in giving both worlds the attention, energy and discipline they deserve. Yet, for students who manage to achieve this equilibrium, the journey becomes deeply enriching — shaping them into focused, creative and resilient individuals.
For Anmol Preet Kaur, a student achiever from Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, the process has been transformative. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, “Balancing academics and my musical journey has definitely been challenging, but it has taught me so much about discipline and time management. I try to plan my day carefully, making sure I dedicate enough time to riyaaz, rehearsals, and practice, while also keeping up with my academic work.”
Her experience mirrors what countless young musicians feel — the constant pull between passion and responsibility. The key, however, lies in creating a rhythm that supports both.
A structured daily routine is essential for students who juggle academics and music. Setting specific hours for riyaaz, revision, assignments and rest helps maintain consistency. As Anmol notes, planning ahead allows her to manage her energy wisely and avoid burnout. Over time, this structure becomes a habit that keeps both commitments on track.
For many artistically inclined students, music becomes a source of clarity and motivation. The discipline of daily practice enhances focus, memory and emotional balance — all essential for academic success. Anmol beautifully captures this when she says, “Music is such an important part of my life — it actually helps me stay focused and motivated for my studies too.”
When used intentionally, music can strengthen a student’s learning abilities rather than distract them.
One of the biggest advantages for students at ACFA is the supportive environment that nurtures both artistic and academic growth. Whether it’s theory exams, practicals or stage performances, teachers play an active role in guiding students through every challenge. Anmol acknowledges this wholeheartedly: “Our teachers at ACFA have been amazing… They make sure we’re prepared in every way possible, which takes a lot of pressure off and allows me to grow in both areas.”
Having mentors who understand your goals makes the balancing act far more manageable.
Family support, encouragement from peers and a strong mentor network can make a world of difference. Anmol credits her family for giving her the flexibility and emotional backing she needs. This circle of support helps students stay grounded and reassured during demanding times.
Balancing studies and music is not about perfection — it’s about consistency, passion and learning to prioritise. Over time, students develop invaluable qualities such as time management, discipline, resilience and self-awareness.
As Anmol puts it, her journey now feels “really rewarding,” as she continues to grow both as a student and as a musician.
In the end, finding harmony between academics and music is much like crafting a beautiful performance — it requires practice, patience and heart. And when done well, the result is a balanced, fulfilled and confident artist-scholar ready to shine in both worlds.
