Pichavaram, a charming village in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district, is renowned for hosting the world’s second-largest mangrove forest. Nestled between the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries, this destination offers an enchanting experience with its extensive mangrove forests. A visit to Pichavaram is best started with a boat ride through these mangrove swamps. Visitors can choose between motorboats and rowboats to navigate the intricate maze of mangroves, whose roots are permanently submerged underwater.

This wetland is a sanctuary for critically endangered bird species such as the white-bellied heron and the spoon-billed sandpiper. Winter visitors are particularly fortunate, as they can observe a variety of migratory birds, including storks, snipes, and pelicans. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive olive ridley turtles.
To reach Pichavaram, the nearest major airport is Chennai International Airport, located about 200 kilometers away. For those traveling by train, the closest railway station is in Chidambaram, approximately 13 kilometers from Pichavaram. If you prefer traveling by road, buses are available from Cuddalore to Pichavaram, making it accessible for all kinds of travelers.
