The results of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, one of the most competitive entrance exams for undergraduate engineering programmes in India were declared on June 9, 2024. Each year, thousands of aspirants rigorously prepare for this exam, aiming to secure a coveted seat in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other top engineering colleges across the country, out of which only a few succeed. But, when it comes to talking about Apeejayites, they are always at the forefront!
Meet Gurchet Singh Thind, a student hailing from Apeejay School Mahavir Marg, who has demonstrated his commitment to academic excellence by achieving a commendable score of 174 out of 360 in the JEE Advanced, securing a notable rank of 4,796. His journey towards this accomplishment reflects his steadfast dedication to his studies and his unwavering aspiration to pursue higher education at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

What was your preparation strategy for the JEE Advance exams?
Like many other students, I didn’t start preparing for the JEE in class XI. I began my serious study efforts in class XII. My strategy was to focus primarily on the class XII curriculum, aiming to complete it by early October. After that, I dedicated the remaining three months before the JEE Mains to revising the class XI syllabus. This approach gave me around 10 months in total to manage and balance the studies of both years effectively. When I had ample time to study, I dedicated at least five hours a day to my studies. As exams approached, I increased my study time to eight hours a day for self-study.
Any topic you found most challenging and how were you able to overcome it?
I found Inorganic Chemistry challenging, which I believe impacted my performance in the JEE Mains. However, I worked hard to improve in this area and focused more intensely on it, which helped me perform better in the JEE Advanced.
Did you take any mock test?
The JEE Advanced mock tests were very beneficial for me. I also practiced previous years’ questions through various books and apps. I completed around 15-20 mock tests for JEE Mains and nearly 15, six-hour mock tests for JEE Advanced. These practices significantly improved my performance, helping me develop effective time management skills and cope with exam pressure.
How did the school support you?
I sought significant help from my Chemistry teacher, who was incredibly supportive during class XI. The guidance and assistance were invaluable as they helped me in overcoming challenges and build a strong foundation. This support played a crucial role in my overall preparation for the JEE exams.
What’s your next goal?
I aspire to pursue Computer Science and am committed to enhancing my skills independently. I’m pleased with my marks, especially considering my preparation was done in just one year. My primary goal was to secure a rank below 5,000, which I have achieved. Now, I’m eagerly waiting to see which college I can get into.
What advice would you give to upcoming JEE aspirants?
Consistency in studying is crucial. Even if exam results aren’t as great as you may have expected, maintaining hope and perseverance is essential. With consistent effort, one can overcome challenges and steadily progress toward success.
