Apeejay College of Fine Arts (ACFA), Jalandhar, through its Psychology Forum and The Listening Room, observed World Mental Health Week. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about mental well-being and resilience, especially in times of crisis. The theme for this year, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” highlighted the importance of ensuring mental health support even during challenging circumstances.
The week-long observance began with a Workshop on Expressive Arts Therapy, conducted by Ms. Niharika Mazumdar from the Department of Psychology. The interactive session explored the therapeutic use of creative art forms such as painting, music, and movement to facilitate emotional release and healing. Students actively participated in exercises designed to help them channel emotions through art, reflecting the growing relevance of creative therapies in mental health care.

Following the workshop, students from various departments engaged in a series of interactive and creative activities, including a Photo Booth and Open Mic sessions. These events provided a safe and expressive space for participants to share their thoughts, experiences, and perspectives on mental health. The Photo Booth encouraged students to spread positive messages, while the Open Mic gave them a platform to use poetry, storytelling, and music to raise awareness and foster empathy.

The week concluded with a Group Meditation Session for the faculty, focusing on Jacobson’s Progressive Muscle Relaxation Techniques. The session emphasized mindfulness, self-awareness, and stress reduction—practices essential for maintaining mental equilibrium in the academic environment.
Principal Dr. Neerja Dhingra appreciated the efforts of Ms. Niharika and Ms. Harpreet for organising a meaningful and impactful series of events dedicated to mental health. She remarked, “Such initiatives are vital in sensitising both students and faculty about the importance of emotional well-being. The focus on practical tools like expressive arts and relaxation techniques helps nurture a supportive and compassionate academic environment.”

The observance of World Mental Health Week at ACFA reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to holistic education, one that goes beyond academics to include emotional balance, mental strength, and self-awareness. By providing opportunities for open dialogue and creative engagement, the college continues to build a community that values empathy, inclusivity, and psychological wellness—ensuring that mental health remains an integral part of overall growth and education.
