At Apeejay School, Noida, education goes beyond textbooks. The school recently organised an engaging English transcription competition titled Pearls on Paper for students of Class I. This activity offered a platform for young learners to express themselves through the art of cursive writing, transforming a simple exercise into a powerful learning experience.

In an age where digital tools dominate, handwriting may seem less important. However, the competition highlighted how writing by hand continues to play a vital role in developing foundational skills. Students were asked to rewrite a few lines of English text in cursive, encouraging them to focus on neatness, shape, and form. It wasn’t just about penmanship — it was about patience, control, and self-expression.

Building skills beyond the page

The competition benefited the students in several meaningful ways. It helped them develop better control over their pencils and pens, sharpening fine motor skills, finger dexterity, and hand-eye coordination. These are essential developmental milestones for young children. Moreover, as they worked hard to form letters correctly, they also learnt the value of detail and presentation. The event encouraged students to take pride in their work, building a sense of ownership and responsibility.

The atmosphere during the competition was filled with excitement and encouragement. Students were cheered on by their teachers and peers, creating a friendly and supportive space. This promoted healthy competition while fostering friendships. Many students showed unique writing styles, proving that every child has a creative spark waiting to be nurtured.

Recognising excellence and effort

To motivate the students further, prizes were awarded. Jeenat Koshar (Class I D) was declared the Overall First Winner, while Garvit Jindal (Class I B) secured the Overall Second position. The Best in Class awards went to Vibhuti Dhiman (I A), Aavyaan Kumar (I B), Mayank Kumar (I C), and Shanaya Agarwal (I D). These recognitions served as a strong boost to the students’ confidence and inspired them to continue their journey with enthusiasm.

Through events like Pearls on Paper, Apeejay School, Noida, reinforces its commitment to holistic education. The competition was not just a test of writing skills — it was a celebration of effort, expression, and early learning.

As the quote by Annie Proulx aptly says, “Writing comes from reading and reading is the finest teacher of how to write.” This event truly captured that spirit.
