Every year on September 15, the world celebrates the International Day of Democracy, a day dedicated to promoting and upholding democratic principles. In the ever-evolving society, education plays a crucial role in fostering democratic values. Not only does education equip young people with knowledge, but it also instils principles of democracy, shaping future generations’ sense of civic responsibility and informed citizenship.

Miss Priya Rana, a Social Science teacher at Apeejay School, Rama Mandi, highlights the importance of this day stating, “International Day of Democracy reminds us that democracy is not a static achievement but an ongoing journey. It calls upon us to engage actively, uphold human rights, and foster inclusive participation.”

The Foundation of Democratic Values in Education

Education systems globally bear a significant responsibility in nurturing democratic values among students. Core values such as freedom, equality, justice, and participation are fundamental to a thriving democracy. Schools are pivotal in introducing these concepts through curricula that emphasise history, civics, and social studies.

For example, in the Netherlands, students actively participate in student councils, which not only give them a voice in school decisions but also teach them about democratic governance. Similarly, in Japan, students engage in debates on social issues, fostering a deeper understanding of democratic principles and critical thinking. These hands-on experiences help students recognise the importance of their voices and the impact of their actions on society.

Civic Responsibility and Informed Citizenship

A vital component of democratic education is teaching students about civic responsibility. This involves understanding their rights and duties as citizens and the importance of participating in democratic processes. Programs such as community service and mock elections, prevalent in schools across the UK, help students appreciate the value of informed decision-making and active engagement in their communities.

Moreover, education plays a crucial role in promoting critical thinking and media literacy. In today’s digital age, with information readily available and often overwhelming, it is essential for students to develop skills to evaluate credible sources and think critically about the information they encounter. This competency is vital for informed citizenship and
decision-making that aligns with democratic values.

Global Perspectives on Democracy in Education

Different countries adopt varied approaches to integrating democratic values into their education systems. In Finland, the emphasis is on student autonomy and critical thinking, which are considered essential for a functioning democracy. In contrast, the United States places significant focus on civics education, with programs designed to encourage community service and understanding of government processes.

India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 underscores the importance of experiential learning, including activities that promote democratic engagement. This policy aims to prepare students not only for academic success but also for active participation in democratic life.

As Miss Priya Rana further emphasises, “True democracy flourishes when every voice is heard and every citizen contributes to the common good.” This idea is echoed across diverse educational systems, all striving to foster inclusive participation and civic responsibility.

The Future of Democracy Through Education

As global challenges become more complex, the need for strong democratic institutions and informed citizens is increasingly critical. Education systems must evolve to address these demands, ensuring that young people are equipped with the knowledge and values necessary to uphold democracy.

On this International Day of Democracy, recognising the power of education in building and sustaining democratic societies is crucial. Investing in educational initiatives that promote democratic values will be key to ensuring a future where democracy thrives, and every citizen has the opportunity to contribute to the common good.
